FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Spring 2025

If a division is full, and you are placed on a waitlist, SMYB will email you if a spot opens up.  You will have a limited amount of time to lock in slot by completing payment before we move on to the next child in line.  A child must drop from enrollment in order for a spot to open as we do allow registration to maximum capacity.  Drops can happen from now until Jan 12th.

Q: How long does the season run?  What is the time commitment for players?

A: The spring calendar will be publsihed soon.  Teams will practice 1 night a week (possibly 2x before the games start) and will have up to 2 games per week (either Tuesday or Thursday in addition to their regular Saturday game). Shetland teams will have 1 game per week.

Q: How do I know what division my child should play in?

A: We offer 5 divisions for players ages 5-14.  Please refer to the 2025 Pony Baseball Age Chart to confirm your child’s division.

Shetland Minors (T-Ball) Division

Shetland Majors (T-Ball) Division

Pinto (Machine Pitch) Division

Mustang Division

Bronco Division

Pony Division

Q:  What are the fees?  Where do my fees go?  What is included for each player?

A:  Fees for the Spring season are $150 for Shetland, and $200 for Pinto and above.  San Marcos Youth Baseball is a non-profit, volunteer run organization.  Every dollar from registration fees is used to benefit the players, parents and coaches who participate.  Players receive a jersey and hat.  Other league expenses include but are not limited to: insurance, playing equipment (baseballs, catcher’s gear, face masks and heart guards), field maintenance equipment (chalk, hoses, bases, pitching machines, brooms, rakes, etc.), light bills, turf repair bills and repairs to the snack bar.

Q: What additional equipment will I need to purchase for my child?

A:  Players should have their own glove, bat and batting helmet, and a bat bag of some sort is recommended.  Players in the Pinto through Pony divisions are also required to wear a protective cup.   In addition to the provided jersey and hat, players should have baseball pants, belts and socks.  Managers will specify what color should be purchased.

Q:  We want to carpool with our friend/neighbor.  Can we request for our kids to be on the same team?  Can I request a specific coach or practice day?

A:  SMYB does not honor friend requests or schedule requests.  Teams in the Pinto, Mustang, Bronco and Pony divisions are formed via draft. For our Shetland division only, friend requests can be submitted during the registration process under special requests or submitted directly to our Shetland Director via the contact us link on the website.

Q: Can the season sell out?

A: Yes.  Even if you register before the deadline there is a possibility that your player(s) could be placed on a wait list.  Register early to ensure your player(s) are able to be drafted to a team.

Q: My child cannot attend the Evaluations.  Can he/she still play this season?

A:  Yes.  All players who register before draft, pay their registration fees, and are not on the waitlist will be placed on a team. The League understands that sometimes conflicts arise, but every effort should be made to attend the evaluations so that players’ skills can be assessed. Player evaluations give every manager a chance to see the players before team drafts take place.  Accurate assessment of skills allows our managers to form teams that are equally balanced.  Shetland does not have evaluations.

Q: What is the refund policy?

A: SMYB refund policy: Jan 12th, 2025, is the last day to drop and request a refund as drafts will begin following the evals. Drops requested after 1/12 will not receive a refund or credit.
